Learning to swim!

Ethan and Elana are both in swimming lessons this week and next (Mon-Thurs, July 7 through 17). It was originally only Ethan, but Elana was feeling a little left out, so we added her to the class. They're doing very well! Don't know if they'll actually be swimming by the end of this summer's sessions, but I think they'll have the basics down pretty well. I can take them to the pool at the gym to reinforce what they're learning after swim lessons are over (indoor pool, always comfy).

Elana is really afraid of putting her face in the water, but she's trying hard to do it! Ethan doesn't like it, but he's beginning to get used to the feeling.

Poor Headline Choice or Double Entendre?

Longtime Bozo dead at 83

Associated Press - July 3, 2008 11:13 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (AP) - To the world, he was Bozo, but behind the scenes he was Bozo, Incorporated.

Larry Harmon, who played the iconic clown for 52 years, has died at his Los Angeles home at age 83. His publicist says the cause was congestive heart failure.

Harmon was not the first Bozo the Clown, but he embellished Bozo's distinctive look: the orange-tufted hair, the bulbous nose, the outlandish red- white & blue costume. He eventually bought the rights to the character and licensed it to others, particularly dozens of TV stations around the country that hired their own Bozos.

Harmon once joked that you could say he was cloning before anyone else got around to it with DNA.

He said Bozo was a combination of the adult and child in all of us.

I love these guys!

Like most everything else, I first heard about these guys on NPR.
They've been around a while, but I just bought their CD and renewed my interest.

So, is it just me...?

Or do we need to continue the tile "up" - look below at the pix of the tile around the kitchen sink area and next to the rarely-used door to the outside (far left of sink). It just looks weird to me - not having edger tile is part of the problem, I think...

But - what if we continued the "diamond" tile all the way to the top of the cabinet? It would be a 4" wide strip left of the upper cabinets, a 2" wide strip to the far right (near exit door that goes to screened porch), and a 1 1/2" stripe on either side of the kitchen sink.

Hmmm....I think it would look tons better. What do you guys think? Or have I totally confused you with my rambling explanation?

First section "finished"

Of course, grout and sealer yet to come, but here's the tile pattern. We'll be using a medium-gray grout. For once, I'm actually helping with this project a little. I've always liked laying tile - not sure why, but I like it. I think it's fun! (Tells you something about my life, I guess....)

Ok, finally...some pictures for Joy!

Our kitchen is still a bloody mess, and Eric has started the backsplash, so it'll probably be that way for a while. But - here are the pix. What do you think? The sink is AWESOME - 12" deep on the left, 8" on the right. It's filthy right now, or I'd send close-ups. Has tile dust on it and dirty dishes in it.

The backsplash tiles are (small grid) slate and "roman stone" tiles. Don't know what kind of stone it is, but it's cast natural stone, whatever that means. Probably made of limestone dust from a quarry, I'm guessing. All stuff pictured hails from home depot.

I'll send more pix when we have the tile all up and grouted. Then you can all help me choose a final color for the cabinets!

Kitchen Update

Our new sink is BIG! Elana can fit all the way down in it! She had a blast playing with it while it was still in the box.

When I get all the dirty dishes from tonight done, I'll take pix of the "new" kitchen.

It's a Jungle Out There...

I just looked out the window and saw this.

Myrtle and Yertle

Today I saw TWO turtles in our lovely green pond. Going green must be the way to go, since our population has doubled.

Knock Knock!

I heard a tapping at the backdoor just a few minutes ago. The blinds were open, and no one was there. That can only mean one thing:

This is for real!

Our Turtle

I opened our blinds this morning to find our turtle near the back door eating a worm. Our yard has been saturated with rainwater since, oh... February, so our patio makes for a shallower pond. This is the first time we have seen "Myrtle" outside the pond, with the exception of when Danny scooped it into a bucket while trying to clean out the pond.

Look what we found:

A few of my garden treasures...

Okay, so my flower garden isn't what it used to be - just haven't had the hours and hours that I'd love to spend making my own personal paradise. But, a few efforts from last year are showing this year.

I've got a turtle head pokin' out...

Danny found this guy in our pond last weekend when trying to clean it up. We decided it would probably make the turtle happy to leave it a little green, so we filled it up and left it alone.

I wasn't sure the turtle was still in there, until today when it popped up between rain showers for a bit of fresh air.

Who's the mouser?

Last night I saw a tiny little mouse peering out at me from beside the TV center. We were both surprised!! (S)he immediately made a beeline for underneath the couch, and it wasn't long before several animals were in hot pursuit. This little game of "Cat and Mouse" (pun intended!) went on for several hours, with periodic episodes of high-pitched squeaking (taunting, maybe?) and then the whole herd of animals frantically scurrying across the floor to the newest hiding place. Finally one of the animals nabbed the little guy. (S)he was unceremoniously disposed of in the flower bed. Too bad; (s)he was really cute, but I hope there are no siblings out there.

We have eight animals out there (listed alphabetically): Abby, Annie, Bimbo, Dufus, Emily, Fatty, Panda and Simba. Which one caught the mouse?

Strawberry Jam Forever

From the Roy Culinary Files ...

Last night I replenished my/our stock of Strawberry Freezer Jam ...I made 22 cups, and could have made five or six more had I wanted to go to WalMart for more sugar at about midnight. However, this should do us for a year or two. (More than that and it gets syrupy anyway.)

Phew ...!!

I was right (see below) . . . two more rounds being ordered to even out the account ... and keep Abby happy for a while longer . . . then she'll need to be weaned off, I think.

Revelation ...

I have realized that the cause of my consternation (see earlier post) is exactly three times what I have been expending heretofore ... and the Rx contains 3 syringes for a 30-day supply ...
mmmm................ either I have been charged 3x the actual price or I have been seriously undercharged all the other times. Placed a call to Angela the Receptionist ... we shall see.

Sticker Shock!!

Abby has been taking Prozac transdermal cream for three or four months now ... for behavior modification ... mellows her out and she's not so jealous any more ... so she is less inclined to mark her territory to express her displeasure. It's a cream and I just rub a bit inside her ear and she absorbs it -- no hassle, and a lot easier than trying to cram a pill down an uncooperative cat's throat. (Those of you who've never tried this should give it a whirl sometime ... ranks right up there with trying to brush the teeth of a grizzly bear.)
This Kitty Prozac seems to be very helpful, so I've been paying about $59 for a 30-day supply, figuring it's worth it in the long run. Ordered a refill last week and went this morning to pick it up ... it was $177!!! HOLY COW!!
