I found my old plastic retainers (the ones that look like the "clear braces" they are using now) last night. I decided to put it in an sleep with it. As soon as I put it in I could feel which teeth had shifted. Woke up this morning (early) with the feeling that I had been punched in the mouth - repeatedly. I can already tell that my teeth have moved back a lot. Now the question is: should I go through this again to keep my teeth in this position or let them go wherever they want from now on?

Eric has all sides painted except for the kitchen window and the back of the house - that should be finished this weekend. Then we'll start on what promises to be the never-ending job of painting the trim. That will take FOREVER But I'm pleased with the color. Do you think we ought to leave the bottom white or paint it a neutral tan sort of color? I think vote for a brownish neutral... Joy...help!

This weekend I am going to a 10-year reunion... not mine. I'm actually more excited to go to Danny's high school reunion than I ever would be to go to my own. Let me give you an example.

A descendant of the famed Chinese philosopher Confucius will be the director of the new Confucius Institute at the University of Memphis. Dr. Hsiang-te Kung, a 75th generation descendant of Confucius, will head the institute, which was announced Monday by officials of the U of M and Hubei University in China.
The Confucius Institute at the U of M will be the 24th such institute in the United States and one of just more than 100 created since the initiative began in 2004 with an institute in Seoul, Korea. The U of M was chosen after a highly competitive selection process among several universities. It is being established with money provided by the Beijing-based Office of Chinese Language Council International.
The Memphis Institute will be instrumental in fostering closer ties in a number of ways between mainland China and the U.S. Its specific goals will be to promote the understanding of the Chinese language and culture among Americans, to help in developing friendly relations between the U.S. and mainland China, to accelerate the expansion of multiculturalism, and to provide opportunities for students to study the Chinese language.
The local institute also will work closely with the university's new Asian studies and international trade program. That program, which begins this fall, is designed to provide students with the critical skills that more international companies are seeking in their employees, such as foreign language proficiency, cultural sensitivity, experience abroad, and knowledge of international business. The Asian studies program was funded by a gift of $1 million from an anonymous donor.

Coffee Filter Roses

I tried my first coffee filter rose today. The outer petals all fell off at once and I had to just guess which ones went where, but it turned out okay. I need to refine my painting technique, and perhaps actually look at actual flowers for inspiration. Overall, I think it is pretty good for the first attempt. It needs some leaves... (and thorns?)

We awoke to a new day, a day full of the peaceful sound of...

...rotor wash? We couldn't figure out why it sounded like a helicopter was hovering outside our house. Well, that's because a helicopter WAS hovering outside our house. Danny stepped into the backyard to see this:



Okay, so now we know there IS a helicopter... but why? Time to get in the car (in pajamas) to find out. Off we go...

It appears that the helicopter is being used to lift A/C units on top of the new construction at Hope Presbyterian:



My question: Is a helicopter really necessary? Why not use a crane?

So we make a loop around the building to see if anything else interesting can be shot. Well, I got an interesting one, I think:
