Yet another reason to join marching band

California Marching Band Girl Beats Back Muggers With Baton

Thursday, April 30, 2009

QUARTZ HILL, Calif. — Don't mess with the marching band.

That's what California authorities are saying after a 17-year-old girl used her marching band baton to beat back two would-be muggers.

Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Michael Rust says the Quartz Hill girl was walking to school April 24 when two men approached her from behind, tried to grab her coat and demanded money.

Instead, one got a punch in the nose and the other a kick to the groin. Rust says the girl then beat both of them with her band baton before she ran away.

The men had not been caught. But Rust says there's a clear message to take from the encounter:

"The moral to this story is don't mess with the marching band girls, or you just might get what you deserve. Final score: marching band 2, thugs 0."

*To the Guy Who Mugged Me Downtown (Downtown, * Savannah )

I was the white guy with the black Burrberry jacket that you demanded I hand over shortly after you pulled the knife on me and my girlfriend. You also asked for my girlfriend’s purse and earrings. I hope you somehow come across this message. I’d like to apologize.

I didn’t expect you to shit in your pants when I drew my pistol after you took my jacket. Truth is, I was wearing the jacket for a reason that evening, and it wasn’t that cold outside. You see, my girlfriend had just bought me that Kimber 1911 .45 ACP pistol for Christmas, and we had just picked up a shoulder holster for it that evening. Beautiful pistol, eh? It’s a very intimidating weapon when pointed at your head, isn’t it?

I know it probably wasn’t a great deal of fun walking back to wherever you’d come from with that brown stinking sludge flopping about in your pants. I’m sure it was even worse since you also ended up leaving your shoes, cellphone, and wallet with me. I couldn’t have you calling up any of your buddies to come help you try to mug us again. I took the liberty of calling your mother, or “Momma” as you had her listed in your cell, and explaining to her your situation. I also bought myself some gas on your card. I gave your shoes to one of the homeless guys over by Vinnie Van Go Go’s, along with all of the cash in your wallet, then I threw the wallet itself in a dumpster.

I called a bunch of phone sex numbers from your cell. They’ll be on your bill in case you’d like to know which ones. Alltel recently shut down the line, and I’ve only had the phone for a little over a day now, so I don’t know what’s going on with that. I hope they haven’t permanently cut off your service. I was about to make some threatening phone calls to the DA’s office with it. Oh well.

So, about your pants. I know that I was a little rough on you when you did this whole attempted mugging thing, so I’d like to make it up to you. I’m sure you’ve already washed your pants, so I’d like to help you out. I’d like to reimburse you for the detergent you used on the pants. What brand did you use, and was it liquid or powder? I’d also like to apologize for not killing you and instead making you walk back home humiliated. I’m hoping that you’ll reconsider your choice of path in life. Next time you might not be so lucky. If you read this message, email me and we’ll do lunch and laundry.

Peace!

Speak of the devil...

Saw my ducks and the big white guy this morning, plus a new female mallard has joined the group. I haven't seen the big white guy since last fall, but one day after talking about him on here and he returns. Reminds me of the bag full of $1 million dollars I haven't seen in a while...

I think the big white guy is a goose from his size, but he may just be a huge white duck. The two males and one female in the first two pictures are regulars and taken a few weeks ago. The other pictures are from this morning with the new group of five.

Getting all my ducks in a row...

I kept hearing this weird noise. I said it was some sort of bird. Danny said it was just some kids. We were both right. There were two little girls from down the street at our front door who were very excited because they found a mama duck and 8 babies in our yard! They chased them up to our front door, but the girls ran off when they saw me looking back at them. I got a couple pics through the window. Danny told the girls not to chase the ducks anymore and we watched them cross the street. They all made it over the curb except for one, but the good mama duck waited until the little duck finally conquered the curb! Then they moved about until they reached the very center of the cul-de-sac across the street for a little rest. I walked across the street camera-in-hand to try to snap some pics about 10 minutes later. They were still there, trapped between two houses. I hope they all make it to the pond down the street.

We Didn't Start the Flame War

From Wikipedia:
Flaming is a hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users. Flaming usually occurs in the social context of a discussion board, Internet Relay Chat (IRC) or even through e-mail. An Internet user typically generates a flame response to other posts or users posting on a site, and such a response is usually not constructive, does not clarify a discussion, and does not persuade others. Sometimes, flamers attempt to assert their authority, or establish a position of superiority over other users. Other times, a flamer is simply an individual who believes he or she carries the only valid opinion. This leads him or her to personally attack those who disagree. In some cases, flamers wish to upset and offend other members of the forum, in which case they can be called "trolls". Most often however, flames are angry or insulting messages transmitted by people who have strong feelings about a subject.

It's time for a new car....

and the Scion xB is the one I'm leaning mostly towards getting. Took one for a test drive today and love it. I also tried the Scion xD, which I originally had more interest in, but it just doesn't hold a candle to the xB. I did a lot of research online for the past several months of the Scions, Toyota Matrix, Nissan Versa, Mazda 3, but usually had more of an interest in the xD and just started looking at the xB a few weeks ago. All the user reviews claim they absolutely love it, many stating they had no interest until they took a test drive they said it beat everything else they looked at. I wanted good cargo flexibility and a low price and this one only runs about $17-18K and cargo area and visibility of an SUV.

The dealership here only had the white and silver color (pretty much the same color as mom's van), but the colors i'm most interested in are the Teal or Stingray (Bluish Silver). Leaning mostly for the Teal since it's a little darker. Anyone else have any thoughts?
